Most people today, actuarily speaking, will live to 80 years old plus. Does that mean that starting at 65, people retire and start a 20 or 30 year vacation? For a generation that often defined themselves by what they did for a living, I think that just retiring or "going out to pasture" is not an option.
I just finished the book "The Big Shift: Navigating the New Stage Beyond Midlife." Written by Marc Fredman, the founder and CEO of Civic Ventures, a think tank on boomers, work and social purpose. The book is written for the 50's and 60's crowd who may soon leave their life's work but don't want to leave life. It contains examples: people who used what they already knew to make a mid-course correction. It also covers longer range issues. like schooling, historical information on aging and social security.
I did a video blog based on his book. It didn't include any soundbites from Marc. Luckily, I found a nice 4:30 explanation by Marc discussing the Encore years, when he was interviewed on KATU Portland.
