Last year, I interviewed, Laura Howard-Gayeton. She runs Laloo's Ice Cream. Located in Sonoma County, California, it's become a vibrant operation. So much so, she's had to put together a cooperative with other goat ranches in Wisconsin to cover demand and sales. Laloo's is now in 1400 stores nationwide including Whole Foods.
Raised on a farm, Howard-Gayeton, was a TV and film producer. She returned to her roots found success.
Recently, there have been a number of stories of women who work farms. Not just as part of a husband wife team, but as sole owner operator. Not just sitting behind a desk, but getting out and doing the hard work.
Robin Dunn, is one of those women. She was profiled in an AARP article. The 53 year old brought her great grandparents farm in 1990.
In the AARP article they note;
Women primarily ran more than 306,000 farms in 2007, representing about 14 percent of the nation's 2.2 million farms run by a single person making the everyday decisions, according to the most recent Department of Agriculture data. That's up from 237,819, or 11 percent, in 2002, and nearly triple the 5 percent of farms that women operated in 1982.
Here's a video that AARP did on Dunn. It covers the different ways she's made the farm a success, as well as her thoughts on women choosing to work the land and raise livestock.
