The Beauty of Elderly Animals

Photographer Isa Leshko latest project. Just like humans, the faces of elderly animals show a life of experience.

People always gravitate toward the cute infant animals. Photographer Isa Leshko decided to capture animals who are in the twilight of their years. Her decision to do her ongoing series of elderly animals was based on watching her mother succumb to Alzheimer's disease. She explains it this way;

Caring for my mother had a profound impact on me and I knew I would eventually explore photographically my emotions from this time. Shortly after I had returned from New Jersey, I encountered a blind elderly horse who was living on a relative's property. I was mesmerized by this animal and spent the afternoon photographing him. After reviewing my film, I realized I had found a project that would help me exorcise my grief.

Most are farm animals, but Isa also includes dogs and cats.
She notes that she realized that the "images are a testament to survival and endurance. They raise questions about what it means to be elderly." To see the whole collection, go to Isa's website.
